Grapefruit study 6x6 o/b

This grapefruit half has been sitting in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks, waiting for me to paint it's picture. I kept putting it off because for some reason I thought it seemed too complicated to paint, and I'd probably just mess it up. So, today, I thought I would use the back of an unwanted painting to try a practice painting of it. Just to try it, no big deal... and before I knew it, I noticed that I was much more relaxed than usual, not afraid to make mistakes, and just scrape them off and try again. And after a while, I was surprised to find that I didn't do such a bad job, and I learned a few things. I even like how the shadows zig zag across the picture and create different shapes. I'll have to paint this one again sometime, and use a good peice of board, and hopefully try and get in that same frame of mind again!

  1. This looks really good, Debbie! It just reinforces the truth that letting yourself not care whether you "ruin" a painting will set you free in so many ways.

  3. This is superb, Debbie! The loose brushwork of the top surface of the grapefruit is my favorite. Masterfully done. Remember that mindset and don't worry about making a sale!
