"Lemon"

Oil on 5"x7" Ampersand Gessobord
Painting this cut lemon, I had such a craving for some lemonade. I think summer is just around the corner. I can't wait.
I've painted lemons before, but this time I used just 3 colors and white. Ultramarine blue, Alizarin Crimson, and Cadmium Yellow. I think using only a few colors makes painting a bit less confusing for me, and easier to understand.

  1. Very nice, especially the slice! I have always had trouble painting the shadows on lemons, maybe I will take your advice next time and use fewer colors.

  2. It's beautiful Deb. I never would have guessed the color palette was just four colors. I'd like to try that sometime.

  3. Wonderful paintings. When I was teaching plein Aire painting I strictly limited folks to 3 colors + white. It is amazing what can be accomplished with them. This lemon came out very nice. My gallery pardner sets up his still lifes in a shadow box with a light bulb inserted into it for lighting. I see you are set up in a box. Do you use the same lighting technique?
    God bless and happy painting

  4. Carol, Mona and Gary, thank you for your comments!! I love getting them.
Gary, the "light box" I set up is a cardboard box with a floor lamp aimed at it from the front, and off to one side. I have seen some that have a light inside the top of the box, I'd like to try that sometime too.
