Cupcake

(above) Oil sketch on gessoed paper, (Below) Oil on Linen panel

I wanted to try painting the newest "Different Strokes From Different Folks" challenge. A picture of a row of cupcakes. I picked the center cupcake to do a painting of. I have been wanting to try painting on linen again. So, recently I ordered a large piece of folded unprimed linen from Utrecht. I thought I'd cut a small piece of it and mount it on a hard board panel. So, I gessoed it and glued it to a panel, and then did my painting on it. I'm really excited to make some more panels this way.
I wasn't quite satisfied with my cupcake painting, and decided to do a sketch of it on gessoed paper to try some other colors, and to try and paint a bit looser. And, in the end, I like my sketch much better than my painting! I've since tried to change the painting to look more like the sketch, but, it wasn't working out, I just wound up making it worse. Oh well. So, here is a picture of my sketch, and a picture of the painting before I messed with it, and now that I look back, it doesn't look too bad after all. I hate when I do that!!!

  1. I think they're both great, Debbie. I like the texture, and intimacy of the one on linen. But do love the sketch on gessoed paper. It has a gorgeous airiness and light to it, and beautiful colors in the cast shadow. Yummy!

  2. Hi Debbie. Well done on both. The sketch is super duper awesome.
If you don't mind, I'd like to know what kind of glue (matte medium?) you used to mount the linen, and did you wrap it over the edges. And I'm curious about gessoed paper too. Thanks :)

  3. Well I like your painting on the panel best! But that's just my opinion both are winners though.

  5. Debbie, I like the version on gessoed paper best because it looks so effortless, yet dimensional. Maybe the smoother texture of the paper is helpful for a small subject?

  6. Mona, thank you, I think the smoothness of the paper helped, the gesso added just a touch of a "dryness" that helped pull the paint off the brush, it had a very pleasant feel to it.

  7. Both are wonderful, Debbie, but the softness of the sketch really appeals to me.

  8. I really love the texture of the linen painting, and you worked out the colours beautifully. The gessoed paper sketch is so lovely and loose.

    Cheers,

  12. Debbie, I really like both of these and for very different reasons. I've never painted on linen, but I think you're linen version is so appealing. I'm going to have to go for it and try out the linen; very well done!
