Oil on 6"x8" Linen Panel
I tried another still life using some of the same items as last time. This one is on a 6"x8" linen panel that I had made. I had put about 3 or 4 coats of gesso on it, and sanded it before painting. I think the extra gesso made the panel smoother, and better to paint on. My husband thought I should name this painting, " Sand dollar and Friends". I don't usually think up very imaginative titles for my paintings, so I thought this time I'd take his suggestion. It sounds better than, "Butterfly, Hyacinth, Shells, and Ribbon Still Life." :)
I agree with your husband on the name, great painting overall! The composition is well done.

ReplyDeleteA lovely piece. How do you decide on your background color and format (if that's what you call it)? This one is pretty close to the color of the small shell. Did that come into play?

ReplyDeleteCarol, my set up was inside a cardboard box, so the color is the color of the cardboard, I hadn't noticed how it matched the little shell! that was a nice coincidence.
I love the lighting, and the resulting soft shadows. Everything flows together so beautifully.

ReplyDeleteThat gloss you have captured on that little shell is beautiful! Love the hyacinths and the ribbons just give these latest pieces both a continuity and a sense of happy memories of youth. Lovely work!!
ReplyDeleteSimply lovely still life; Cardboard box- I'll have to try that; do you use a special light to shine onto your scene? Also, with that special gessoed surface do you find you can get paint effects you wouldn't with a typical surface? I just want to pick up any panel and paint!
