Delft Salt and Pepper Shakers with Fruit

Oil on 8x6 hardboard panel

I've been wanting to paint these little blue and white china salt and pepper shakers. I like their color and the soft ripple they have in their shape. I thought their strong blue color would look nice along with something yellow and something red. I'm really happy with how this came out, because lately I have been trying out a more detailed and smooth way of painting, which is very nice, but, not quite "me". I can see in this, a return to how I naturally paint. And I like it much better. It's me :-)
Thank you to everyone, for your wonderful comments, I appreciate them so much!

  1. Debbie, I am always so impressed with how you paint texture. I can almost hear the salt & pepper shakers 'clink' when they touch. This is wonderful.

  3. Funny that you say you've been trying out a 'more detailed and smoother' technique; I noticed a difference in the grapevine painting (is that one of them?) But I thought it was less detailed, and more 'decorative' and less dimensional. This current one shows much more complexity; so was the other method more difficult? If so, it's good to find it's not worth the extra work!

  4. Judy, you're right, the grapevine was one, and the playing cards paintings too. I also had started with a drawing on the board, which caused me to keep things very tight. I liked that method alot, but now I know it works best only with certain subjects, like the cards.

  6. Wow, you are amazing. The salt and pepper shakers came out fabulous. The highlights are great. And, as always, the texture of the fruit is perfect.
