Asters and Iris (finish)

Oil on 8"x10" Canvas Panel
When I started this painting, I had my usual few colors out that I like to work with, but I just couldn't get the bright pink/red color of those asters right with the alizarin crimson, or cad. red. I tried some winsor red, then some rarely used tubes of perylene red, scarlet lake, and magenta. They were still too warm of a red, and the magenta wasn't helping. Then I remembered a small, 1/2 used tube of permanent rose that I had bought years ago, and every so often I still see it in the bottom of a shoe box that contains some tubes of paint that I lost interest in, or just don't like for some reason. I pulled that out and tried it, and it was perfect! I also started using it instead of the other reds in my mixtures and I have to say, I don't know why I ever stopped using it????? All of a sudden it's my new favorite color, I'll have to go out and buy a new tube!!!

  1. Stunning painting, beautifully painted. I love permanent rose especially for flowers you just can't get that colour by mixing.

  2. Debbie, it's nice to be back online after a week so I can check in on your new work! I love your violets, tulip and strawberries and this lovely bouquet. All paintings have your delicate touch and wonderful little compositions. I'm with Liz on the reds found in your strawberries and tulip, your brilliant and clear reds always amaze me.

  5. Hurray for permanent rose! Absolutely beautiful, Debbie. I love the one small lavendar flower pointing down. Such a nice touch, and counterbalances the iris.
    Really lovely work!
